The Best Time of Year to Paint a House Exterior in Dallas

North Texas heat, humidity swings, and spring storms all affect how paint cures. Here's the window we aim for and how we work around a Dallas summer.
Exterior paint is a chemical product with a temperature range, and Dallas spends a good chunk of the year outside of it. Most premium acrylics want surface temperatures roughly between 50°F and 90°F while they cure, with low overnight dew. Get outside that band and you trade durability for convenience.
The sweet spots: spring and fall
Late March through May and mid-September through early November are the two best windows in North Texas. Days are warm enough for a proper cure, nights don't drop into dew territory, and the sun isn't cooking the south and west elevations at 2 p.m.
Working through a Dallas summer
We paint through the summer, but we chase shade. That means starting on the east side early, moving to north elevations mid-day, and finishing on the west side late in the afternoon. Painting a 130°F sun-baked wall causes flash drying — the film skins over before it can level or bond, which is where you get lap marks and premature peeling.
What to avoid
- Painting within 24 hours of rain — masonry and wood need to be dry all the way through, not just on the surface.
- Late-day coats in fall when temperatures drop fast overnight and dew settles on an uncured film.
- Any exterior work when humidity is very high and surfaces stay damp past mid-morning.
If your paint is already failing, don't wait for the perfect month. Bare wood and chalking stucco get worse quickly once they're exposed. We can prep and prime the failing areas now and schedule the finish coats for better weather.
