The Prep Work That Decides Whether Your Paint Lasts

Two crews can use the same premium paint and get results a decade apart. Almost all of that difference happens before the first finish coat.
Paint does not fix a surface — it copies it. Every nail pop, every bit of chalk, every trace of grease shows through and shortens the life of the finish. That's why we spend more hours prepping than painting.
Clean first, always
Exteriors get washed to remove chalk, pollen, and mildew. Interiors get degreased around kitchens and baths and dusted everywhere else. Paint applied over a dirty surface is bonded to the dirt, not the substrate.
Repair, then prime what you repaired
- Scrape and feather-sand every loose edge so the transition disappears under the finish.
- Fill nail holes, cracks, and drywall damage, then sand flush.
- Re-caulk failed joints at trim, windows, and siding transitions — this is the most common water entry point on a Texas exterior.
- Spot-prime all bare wood, patched drywall, and stains. Unprimed patches flash through the topcoat as dull spots.
Protection is part of prep
Floors, furniture, landscaping, and hardware get covered and masked before anything is opened. A tidy job site isn't cosmetic — it's the difference between a repaint and a cleanup bill.
