What to Expect: The Cabinet Refinishing Process, Step by Step

Cabinet refinishing is more disciplined than wall painting. The finish has to survive being touched every day, so most of the schedule is prep and cure time rather than color coats.

Day 1 — Removal and labeling

Every door and drawer front comes off, and each one gets numbered so it returns to the exact opening it came from. Hinges, pulls, and screws are bagged by location. Counters, appliances, floors, and backsplash get masked, and we set up plastic containment with the HVAC sealed.

Days 1–2 — Cleaning and sanding

Kitchen cabinets carry years of cooking grease, and no coating bonds to grease. Everything gets degreased, rinsed, and then scuff-sanded so the primer has a mechanical grip. Dings, chipped edges, and old hardware holes get filled and sanded flush at this stage.

Day 2–3 — Bonding primer

A cabinet-specific bonding primer goes on next. On oak we may add a grain filler or extra primer build if you want the grain to disappear. On thermofoil or laminate, the primer choice is what determines whether the finish stays put at all.

Days 3–5 — Finish coats and cure

• Two to three sprayed coats of cabinet-grade enamel, sanded lightly between coats.
• Doors dry flat and stay racked until they can be handled without marking.
• Boxes are sprayed in place, so the kitchen stays a work zone during this stretch.

Day 5–6 — Reinstall and walkthrough

Doors go back on their original openings, hinges are adjusted so the reveals line up, and new hardware gets installed if you're changing it. We walk the kitchen with you under good light and touch up anything you flag.

Living with it while it cures

The finish is dry to the touch quickly but keeps hardening for two to three weeks. During that window, avoid harsh cleaners, don't stack heavy items against door faces, and wipe spills instead of scrubbing. After full cure, mild soap and water is all it needs.
